  • Mathematical Physiology (Repost)
Mathematical Physiology provides an introduction into physiology using the tools and perspectives of mathematical modeling and analysis. It describes ways in which mathematical theory may be used to give insights into physiological questions and how physiological questions can in turn lead to new mathematical problems. The book is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the fundamental principles of cell physiology, and the second with the physiology of systems. In the first part, after an introduction to basic biochemistry and enzyme reactions, the authors discuss volume control, the membrane potential, ionic flow through channels, excitability, calcium dynamics, and electrical bursting.

  • EEG - fMRI: Physiological Basis, Technique, and Applications (2009) Description: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and Electronecephalography (EEG) are very important and complementary modalities since fMRI offers high spatial resolution and EEG is a direct measurement of neuronal activity with high temporal resolution. Interest in the integration of both types of data is growing rapidly as it promises to provide important new insights into human brain activity as it has already done so in the field of epilepsy. The availability of good quality instrumentation capable of providing interference-free data in both modalities means that electrophysiological and haemodynamic characteristics of individual brain events can be captured for the first time. Consequently, it seems certain that the integration of fMRI and EEG will play an increasing role in neuroscience and of the clinical study of brain disorders such as epilepsy.

The proposed book will discuss in detail the physiological principles, practical aspects of measurement, artefact reduction and analysis and also applications of the integration of fMRI and EEG. All applications, which are mainly in the fields of sleep research, cognitive neuroscience and clinical use in neurology and psychiatry will be reviewed.

  • Targeted Cancer Immune Therapy (2009)
Description: The principle of cancer immune therapy remains the stimulation of the immune system to control and destroy tumors, but the scope is expanded in steady and fast pace, the approach is modernized every few years, new molecules are revealed annually, and the understanding of the mechanisms is getting deeper and deeper.

Targeted Cancer Immune Therapy covers cytokine immune therapy, cell-based immune therapy, and targeted immune therapy. In each of these three sections, only the novel aspects of immune therapy were selectively described instead of attempting to cover any historical achievement. In the first section, Cytokine Immune Therapy, the IL12 family, IL18, IL21, IL24, IL28, and IL29 were heavily discussed in regard to the anti-tumor function and application in treating tumors. In the second section, Cell-based Immune Therapy, the focus was given to engineering potent immune regulatory or effector cells such as dendritic cells, T cells, and stem cells. The cell engineering design is primarily based on the increased understanding of the interaction of tumor antigen presenting cells, antigen specific effector cells, and the tumor microenvironment. In the third section, Targeted Immune Therapy, the focus was given on rearticulating the antibody therapy for boosting immune response, which includes immunocytokines, "T-body", and tumor targeted CpG ODN. Immunocytokines represent a new class of biopharmaceuticals composed of two well known immune components – antibodies and cytokines – with the unique ability to target cytokines to the tumor microenvironment and thereby activate antitumor responses. Some or all of these innovative approaches may ultimately become the future effective immune therapy for treating malignancy.

  • The Human Side of Medicine: Learning What It's Like to be a Patient and What It's Like to be a Physician
At a time of great change in the technology and delivery of medical care, the timelessness and permanence of the non-technical aspects of medicine--the human side--are of profound value to patients and physicians alike. With more than 30 years of medical practice, teaching, advising, and mentoring medical students and undergraduates, Savett champions two premises: first, that the importance of physicians mastering the human side of medicine is as critical as learning its biology and technology; and second, that this can be taught. Attending to the human side refines diagnosis and treatment by recognizing the uniqueness of each patient's experience, and it enriches the experience for all those in the caring professions. Physicians who have always put their patients' interests first and never compromised their professional values have preserved their identity, vitality, and enthusiasm as caring doctors. This is a book about what keeps the practice of medicine stimulating: not fascinating cases, but fascinating people and relationships, the best reasons to enter medicine. Savett believes that learning about the human side of medicine will help to attract talented and compassionate people to a career in medicine and will provide a context for later learning in medical school, and that teaching the human side of medicine as a primary subject is critical to become a good doctor. The community of patients is the ultimate beneficiary. Essential reading for all students considering the profession of medicine as well as practicing physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel.prosthetics.

  • Adversity, Stress, and Psychopathology
"Adversity" involves exposure to unpropitious or calamitous circumstances. It occurs in extreme situations such as prolonged combat or natural disasters, both of which affect whole groups or communities of people simultaneously. It is found as well in more individually targeted events such as child abuse, bereavement, rape, physical illness, marital separation or divorce, unemployment, and homelessness. Exposure to adversity is not randomly distributed in society. It varies with gender, ethnic or racial background, and socioeconomic status.

In this volume, leading investigators review research on the nature of adversity and its relationship to major types of psychopathology including schizophrenia, depression, alcoholism and other substance-abuse disorders, antisocial personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and nonspecific distress. These relationships are examined in terms of theoretical concepts of life stress that describe the characteristics of the ongoing situation in which adverse events occur and the factors of personality and coping ability that also affect psychiatric outcomes. The authors sift through firm and infirm findings and critically evaluate existing theory and research strategies and provide an integrative theoretical framework. No other book offers as comprehensive and authoritative a discussion of the role of psychosocial stress in causing mental disorders.
