  • Structure of Enteric Neurons (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)
    The enteric nervous system contains numerous different neuron populations which belong to three main groups, primary afferent neurons, interneurons and effector neurons. The most extensive knowledge on the different enteric neuron types is derived from studies in the guinea-pig. A significant obstacle for the transfer of this knowledge to putative equivalent enteric neurons of other species, including human, is species differences as to their morphological, chemical, physiological etc. phenotypes. Modern morphological classifications are based on the work of the Russian histologist Dogiel. Since the late 1970’s, refined morphological classifications of enteric neurons beyond Dogiel have been attempted mainly in two species, the guinea-pig and the pig. These reflect the immunohistochemical diversity of enteric neurons more precisely but are far from being complete. In this paper, we followed two aims. Firstly, we present an overview on the chemical coding of the morphological neuron types described by Stach in the pig intestine. In doing so, we have pointed out the difference between the definitions of type I neurons given by Dogiel and Stach. Secondly, we attempt to provide a basis for the morpho-chemical classification of human enteric neurons as revealed by their immunoreactivity for neurofilaments and several neuroactive substances or related markers.

    Biology: Macmillan Science Library This is a great book. Great colour images. A real treasure this one.

    Biology explains biological concepts, reviews the history of science, explores related fields, discusses critical issues such as embryogenesis and commercial applications of research in biology and addresses ethical issues. Careers in biology are also explored. Each fully illustrated volume contains sidebars, bibliographies, timelines, charts, a glossary and individual and cumulative indexes.

    "This four-volume reference set presents biological concepts covered in the high school biology curriculum and includes historical information, careers, and ethical issues...A unique feature of the topic outline found in each volume is a list of careers in biology, major scientists contributing to the history of biology, experimental techniques, diseases, and ethical issues."

    Part of the Macmillan Science Library series, Biology serves students from middle school to the undergraduate level. It provides 432 signed entries on a broad range of topics pertaining to biology, including basic concepts (Antibody, Genetic code, Nervous systems, Wetlands); history of the science (Crick, Francis; History of medicine); related fields (Agronomist, Emergency medical technician); and issues (Environmental health, Genetic control and development) as well as topics of interest to young adults, such as smoking, birth control, alcohol, and STDs. Emphasis is on molecular genetics, human physiology, and biodiversity. The articles range in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages. They appear in alphabetical order, and each concludes with see also references as well as suggestions for further reading, including Web sites.

    Helpful reference tools appear in the front matter of each volume, among them a geologic timescale, a metric conversion table, and diagrams of a typical plant and animal cell. Some 550 words appear in bold type in the text and are defined in the page margins as well as in a glossary. Each of the volumes contains a topic outline and index, and a cumulative index is found in volume 4.

    The eye-pleasing layout features many colorful photographs and diagrams that will appeal to casual browsers, and the articles contain more than enough information to meet the needs of students. This informative set is highly recommended and would be a useful addition to a middle- or high-school library as well as a public library. RBB
